5 Natural Alternatives to Medicine to treat childhood disorders using apple cider vinegar, manuka honey, ginger, tea tree oil, and duct tape!
Having four kids it is bound to happen. Lice, warts, molluscum or the occasional stomach ache or light sore throat. Some of these afflictions are contagious and are very difficult to get rid of. Seek a doctor’s advice for careful diagnosis of the problem, but have an open eye to the treatment. Why not go natural? Here are some well-known alternatives to allopathic medicine treatments that have really worked on my kids.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Two of my kids had molluscum, a benign skin disorder that resembles papules with a white dot in center on your child’s skin. One of my kids had it badly and something had to be done. The dermatologist suggested he could numb each papule and then cut (actually he used the work nick off) each one off with a scalpel. What? Uhm…no way. There must be a better method to try first. After researching I found that apple cider vinegar works well as an alternate therapy. Each night the vinegar was dabbed on the eruption with a cotton ball, and then cotton ball covered with a band-aid and left on over night. In two weeks all were gone. My daughter had them too, less badly. Hers were just starting. Over two nights hers were gone too. She smelled like salad, (only kidding) but who cares?
This is a honey from New Zealand that you can order online or from a local health food store. This honey is a powerful antibacterial agent and has been shown in some studies to kill MRSA or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It can be used for many things, but I tend to use it for sore throats. If you child has a mild sore throat, mix a spoon of this honey in some orange juice and have them eat it. Encourage them to let the honey lay on their throat before swallowing. Last week my daughter had a sore throat with high fever. It was late and I knew we could wait to see a doctor the next day if needed. Gave her the honey and the next day her fever was just slightly elevated and throat better. More honey. Following day fever and sore throat were gone. Not 100% sure if it was the honey that did the trick, but it certainly was worth it to try. We order this online from amazon.
Making an herbal tea using fresh ginger is an excellent way to help upset stomach, indigestion and excess gas. Its effect works almost immediately. You can also buy ginger herbal tea at health food stores. For children the taste is quite strong so add some honey or juice to soften the strong taste. This is great stuff and works better than Pepto-Bismol!
TEA TREE OIL
This is another powerful antifungal, antibacterial, antiseptic and a natural “pesticide” against insects. One of my kids had lice recently…and like really bad. In a jar we put 4 ounces of base oil and added 6 drops of tea tree oil. Mixed well and rubbed into the hair and scalp. Hair wrapped in a towel overnight. Shampooed out next morning. We also put 3 drops of tea tree oil into the shampoo to use as a preventive measure. Oil treatment repeated again after a couple of days. A natural way to rid of lice. Those chemical products sold to rid of lice are too strong, they penetrate the scalp and can be toxic. Full strength oils should never be used on children and diluted tea tree oil used with caution in young children. You should always dilute pure tea tree oil with another base oil such as almond or grape seed oil. Here is another link if you would like to order online:
Cover warts with a piece duct tape so that no oxygen can get in. Warts need oxygen to live. When the tape starts to come off, replace quickly. This method works as effectively or more effectively than liquid nitrogen, which freezes off the wart. The process could take a while (1-2 months), but it does work. 2 kids with 2 big warts on foot, 2 months, all gone.
Always seek medical advice if you are not comfortable with trying a natural remedy first. As a parent trust your intuition. Lice, warts and molluscum are not life threatening. But repeatedly using chemical products on your child could be harmful to them long-term. Try some of these ideas and let me know how they work for your kids. And please share with me your other natural remedies. Always looking for using healthy alternatives first before using medicines on my children. Thanks for reading and taking an interest in your and your children’s health.
