Earth Day: Link Between Our Environment and Health
Earth day. A day to reflect on the resources from our precious earth. A day to reflect on how our daily lives affect our environment. A day to reflect on how our current environment can bring harm to our health. With our earth, man has played too long with fire. We are getting burnt. Industrial nations and our ever-increasing demands for more and more has resulted in our environment playing havoc with our health. The link between our environment and our health is now well established.
A Clean Environment For Future Generations
There have been environmental advances by forward thinking men and women for keeping our environment clean and resources stable. If each one of us participates we can hope to sustain our earth’s resources and make our environment cleaner. For the present generation, for all the future generations, for our great-grandchildren and so on.
Econutrition considers both healthy eating and ecological sustainability. The choices of what foods we eat and the packaging on the food, where the food was grown or produced, how it was made. How do we heat up our foods? How much should we use plastics? How much meat and fish can we eat to keep the supply ecologically stable? Is the food we eat genetically modified? Should we buy organic? How much water and petrol/gas were used to make these foods?
We want to be in good health by eating healthy and we want to keep our environment a healthy place to live. Many of us want to make informed decisions on these subjects. We want to make choices to keep our babies and children healthy too while keeping the environment safe for them. And yet many of us are misinformed citizens, including myself, on what choices we can make that help save our Earth and our health. According to Nutritionist Resource ‘Eco-nutrition’ is a fledgling term used to describe the relationship between food, human health, environment, agriculture and economic development.
Misinformed or just too busy?
We are all unique. We live in our own cultural, economic, time and social constraints. Despite our best intentions we sometimes make the wrong daily decisions with our food and environment choices. This is okay. Awareness and attempts to better our nutrition with our environment are more important than being misinformed or just indifferent.
A New Series on Eco-Nutrition
This is why I have decided to write a new series on eco-nutrition. To promote awareness on this important subject. As a dietitian and nutritionist I feel eco-nutrition is a trend to help readers learn how to protect our environment and make informed nutrition choices. This article is an introduction, appropriately starting on Earth Day, on this new series. Articles on healthy eating and ecological sustainability: an eco-nutrition theme. I feel like an misinformed citizen. This series will also help me to make better choices and I sincerely hope the same for you. A trend that is growing, hope you follow along with me.
