Welcome to Day 10 for another comparison between school lunch menus for Pau, France and Toms River, NJ.  Hey, thanks for tuning in! Have had a lot of readers checking out the site so that is great!  I think the topic of school lunches is very important to parents, as it should be.  Looking at the lunches in the Toms River school district I cannot help but wonder ” would I let my kids eat what is served in the school cafeteria on a daily basis?”  I have to say, “NO!” and as parents we need to be more demanding  for what is served in the school cafeteria…don’t you think?  But also perhaps we must be more demanding in ourselves (me included!) as parents by using the home as a role model for a good balance of healthy eating.  When our children are accustomed to enjoying fresh, balanced meals at home, they may be more likely to choose healthy choices in the school cafeteria.

Without more delay, here is the menu for the school lunch program for September 28, 2010:

Toms River, NJ

Choice of 1 main dish, 2 sides and served with a half pint of milk

Chicken Patty Sandwich or Italian Hoagie

Pasta and Vegetable Salad , Fresh Fruit Salad

Pau, France

Served with slices of baguette and water

Carrot Raisin Salad

Beef stew with a creamy pickle, caper, onion sauce served with semolina

Slice of Saint Nectaire cheese and Apple-Raspberry Sauce

If you have been reading the menus from Day 1, you may notice a pattern with the American menus:  they are on a two week cycle, which means that starting every 2 weeks the same menu starts again.  This is a short cycle as most cafeterias, hospitals, etc. use the three week cycle.  Noting again though, that every Friday, Toms River does have the same menu:  Domino’s Pizza and Rosati’s Italian Ice.  Well, elementary kids are off tomorrow as it is Wednesdays, but see you back again on Thursday, September 30, 2010…
