French School Lunch Compared to American School Lunch, Day 15

No school on Wednesdays…but here we are back again for yet another look at what are the Frenchie kids eating?  And those American kiddies?  Well, here it is:  the menu for Day 15. 

Toms River, NJ

Choice of 1 main dish, 2 sides and served with a half pint of milk

Baked Ziti with Meatballs or Macaroni and Cheese

Potato Wedges

Fresh Orange

 

Pau, France

Served with slices of baguette and water

Potato Salad with Sardines

Chicken Saute with Tarragon Sauce

Beignets with Salsifis

Vanilla Flan

 

Hmmm… quite of interesting and weird stuff served on the Frenchies side!  I will ask you readers, do you know what beignets with salsifis is? I haven’t even heard of this vegetable before.  Salsifis…! They can be either white, red or black.  Here is a link to a picture and explanations in French.  Did you guess what this vegetable is?  Wow, I am impressed they are serving this in the school cafeteria in Pau.  If you cannot figure it out then tune in tomorrow and I will tell you what it is.  And,  the beignets are “donuts” but in this case they are dough cooked liked donuts, but made in a savory form.   Can you guess how the potato salad with sardines is served?  Come back, I will let you know everything!!!     I think that salsifis (we called is Salsify in South Africa) is related to the dandelion, and it tastes (to me at least) like a kind of oyster-y parsnip.

      Hi Charlotte, Thanks for your comment. Is salsify in South Africa have the long green leaves, like the dandelion? How do you cook it? Sounds yummy though, the way you describe it…
