French School Lunch Compared to American School Lunch, Day 19

Our last day of the school week,  yes it is that dear Friday again.  Friday means pizza day in Toms River, although the kids have the choice between the main dish of Domino’s Pizza or Tossed Salad with Tuna. So, given those choices…do your kids choose the tossed salad with tuna OR the pizza?  LET ME KNOW 🙂  !

Domino’s Pizza or Tossed Salad with Tuna

Served with slices of baguette and a glass of water

Mixed Salad Sprinkled with Grated Swiss Cheese

Macaroni and Bolognese Sauce

What are your thoughts?  Kids in France love the pasta with Bolognese sauce!  Although the way this sauce is made in France does not resemble the REAL Bolognese sauce.  In France this pasta ragu is basically sautéed ground beef cooked with canned tomatoes and a bit of herbs.  The authentic Bolognese sauce, which is so delicious, usually asks for a sauté of ground porc (and maybe beef), onions, spices and tomatoes, BUT then this sauce is cooked even longer with either cream or full fat milk.  The ending result is a sticky, yummy ragu

that is served with cooked long flat noodles (like a Tagliatelle), never macaroni or spaghetti.  We are in France though, so “Sauce Bolognese” means it is made the French way.  Either way, the kids love this dish and it is easy and healthy to make, especially if the cream is used just slightly..only to give it that nice mouth feel and taste.  Keep tuned, I will post for you a nice easy recipe for Sauce Bolognese to prepare for your kids or for them to make it themselves.  Buon Appetito!
